Invertebrate Research–Giant Squid

Giant squid can grow up to 43 feet long for males and 33 feet long for females. They are not found in groups as hunters do not see them with others. It eats its prey by using two tentacles to grab and pull the prey into its mouth. In its mouth is a radula with thousands of sharp teeth that shred the food. Giant squid eat fish, shrimp, and other squids. My invertebrate lives in deep oceans across the globs. Many giant squid are caught near New Zealand.

Giant squid may be responsible for stories about monsters from the deep. However, it seems unlikely that a squid could wrap its tentacles around a ship and sink it. Squid can swim very fast, and some of the small squid that live near the surface of the water even shoot out and fly through the air.

Squid live only about 18 months to maybe a year. Squid can have different body patterns. Squid eat tuna and other big fish. Squid can travel in thousands. When squid mate with a female, the male turns bright red. That means no other mate can take the female. Giant squid have 24,000 teeth on tentacles. Squid getting together is called the big bang.

Life Cycle of a Salmon

Salmon Eggs:

Trees help keep salmon eggs healthy.  The roots of trees that grow along rivers and streams stop soil from sliding into the water.  As a result, the water flowing around salmon eggs stays clean.  Trees also provide shade, which keeps the eggs from becoming too warm.

Alevins:

Many alevins hatch in early spring.  Alevins do not look like adult salmon.  Their bodies are only about one inch long.

Fry and Par:

When young salmon go out to find food, they are called fry.  Fry have fins, teeth, and scales.  They are twice as big as alevins are.  When most fry are a few months old, they become parr.  Parr have dark oval parr marks on their bodies.  The dark spots make parr less noticeable to predators.

Smolts:

When fry and parr are ready to leave their freshwater habitats, they are called smolts.  Most smolts are between one and six inches long and weigh less than four ounces.  Smolts look like a small adult salmon.

Fully Grown Salmon:

When a smelt enters the ocean, it is a salmon.  While living in salt water, salmon may swim over one thousand miles.

Mature Salmon:

A mature salmon isa salmon that is long lasting.
